Nineteenth Century Oak Reading Chair

For sale, a Nineteenth Century Oak Reading Chair or Cock Fighting Chair.
This superb chair is similar in design to that which appeared in Sheraton’s design manuals and was developed throughout the Regency Period and onwards.
The pillar or “peg top” legs familiar to the late Seventeenth and early Eighteenth Centuries are connected by wonderfully turned stretchers with notched back legs.
The yoked backrest acts as an armrest for the sitter when sat in reverse for the purpose of reading. Hinged to the back is simple oak bookrest which is adjusted by means of a ratchet mechanism that slots into the backrest.
A seldom seen chair which are generally only encountered in Country Houses and Collections.
