A mid 18th. century Welsh oak treen box for salt or possibly candles, with leather hinged box lid and a lower drawer.
Salt needed to be kept dry, so was stored in a special box which was often a display item hanging inside the fire place.
This one has an inverted sweet heart decoration often found on candle or salt boxes from the Monmouthshire area.
