Marquetry Longcase Clock - Christopher Gould marquetry longcase grandfather %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is an opportunity to acquire an exceptional marquetry antique clock by the most eminent of English makers Christopher Gould who was made a Free Brother in the Clockmakers' Company in 1682. In 1697 he signed the Clockmakers' Company oath of allegiance. In 1701 he worked near the east corner of the Royal Exchange. He was Beadle of the Company in 1713 but by then was receiving a charity pension which continued until his death in 1718. This clock will date circa 1700
His work is always of the highest standards which is comparable to that of his contemporaries such as Tompion , Fromanteel and Graham. They are inevitably in museums , Country houses and serious private collections .
This particular clock was acquired in the most original and untouched condition which is very unusual for a clock of this great age and we have been most careful to retain that order during our conservation . The case has simply been professionally and sympathetically cleaned to remove surface dirt and 4 coats of the finest micro crystalline was has been applied leaving the most wonderful colour and patina . The dial has been left alone but the movement has been professionally serviced to ensure reliability . It is ,of course , in perfect working order.
Interestingly the door was constructed without the usual cleats top and bottom and it has developed a slight bow from side to side over time
The 12 inch square brass dial has a well matted and engraved dial centre with subsidiary dials for seconds and date. It is signed by the maker on the chapter ring .
The fine quality 8 day duration weight driven movement has five finned pillars and demonstrates early use of rack striking which had been invented 25 years before this clock was made and strikes each hour on a bell. It has flat topped brass cased weights and a brass faced domed pendulum bob all of which are original to the antique clock.
The case is constructed in English oak and intricate arabesque marquetry veneered to the front and figured walnut panels to the side and the base is original . It has a glass lenticle in the door which allows the clock to be seen functioning. The hood has doric pillars front and rear and there are glazed apertures in the side so that the movement can be seen.
I have included plenty of images which should accurately represent the clock but , as always , I would suggest a personal viewing or any expert appraisal to see how nice this clock is in the flesh.
The size and proportions are perfect . It is 7 ft 1 inches tall and the door 42 inches in length . The base is 18 inches wide and the maximum depth is 9 . The widest part of the clock , measured across the top moulding is 20inches.
Purists will particularly like the condition but if a client would like the case fully restoring to the standard of my other marquetry antique clocks that can be arranged at additional cost but please be aware that it is quite expensive .I will clean and re-silver the dial free of charge at the buyers request.
At the full asking price I will deliver and set up the clock free of charge in England , Wales and the Scottish Lowlands. A 12 months year guarantee will be provided under these circumstances.
If a lesser offer is accepted the transaction will be considered a trade sale with the clock sold as described and the delivery / collection costs the responsibility of the buyer.
I will ship this clock worldwide by means of a professional Antique packer / shippers who will make a custom wooden crate.
I will assist the buyer to deliver the clock to their preferred shipper
