In General

A wonderful opportunity to buy this rare, magnificent,18th Century George III Flame Mahogany Linen Press c.1790. This is a very pretty example and we have not seen one quite like this ever!

This stunning Linen Press has an exquisite detachable pediment featuring a central oval panel with a beautiful shell inlay design and satinwood banding. Above the oval is a gorgeous scallop shell ornamental motif comprising a semi circle and marquetry scallop shell. This type of decoration was common in antique furniture design during the Queen Anne and Georgian periods. There is a very pretty hand painted garland of green leaves with pink flowers which ropes across the front of the pediment.

This Linen Press has a pair of panelled cupboard doors with a brass inlaid edge on the right hand door. The doors have been masterfully and intricately inlaid with oval panels with satinwood banding featuring beautiful marquetry urns filled with mainly Lily of the Valley flowers. The interior is fitted with five original detachable pull out sliding linen trays.

The lower part has two deep half drawers and one deep full width drawer with oak lined drawer linings and bottoms. The drawers have wonderful brass handles with a central urn and wreath handle design. This magnificent piece of furniture has a fantastic colour and patination.

The Linen Press divides in to three sections to provide easy access into different locations. It would look striking in a variety of rooms including a bedroom, dining room, sitting room or hallway as it is not of an over bearing size.

It is raised on sturdy but elegant bracket feet. The original keys are missing.
Many more photographs are available by email as required.

18th Century c.1790

Flame Mahogany with Satinwood Banding and Marquetry.

Condition

In good solid antique condition. The Linen Press has a number of scratches, nicks and dings and marks commensurate with its age and use. There is a crack in the cornice at the base of the pediment and a further crack in the cornice above the drawers. A strip of upper layer wood is missing on the side to the rear. There is a scratch above the cornice on the side and a split in the wood and wood loss to the rear on the side. There is some staining to the base of the sliding linen trays. It looks as if the inside of the right hand top drawer may have been cleaned as some stage but the difference from the other drawers is not especially marked. The rear of the Linen Press comprises plain wooden boards which is typical of this type of antique furniture. Full photographs showing the condition can be emailed to you.
