This is a stool difficult to unravel, it is of the size frequently referred to as a child's stool. But who would make a child sit on it, even at the age of three the poor dear's knees would be up round its ears. The idea of a bed-stool has been a suggestion in the past but I would expect a much nearer square stool for stability to launch upwards from. I will suggest a candle stand for someone with at least a pair of candlesticks to raise the height of the light at the table, the better to spread the pool of light to eat or work. Another attribution nowadays is to call it a lacemakers stool whereupon the feet of the lacemaker rest to raise their knees to support the lace pillow while working. Of stained pine with rounded ends it would work extremely well for either purpose. It might be thought of as too late for a candle stand but it must be remembered that not everyone could afford oil lamps and electricity was still being rolled out into the 1960s here in rural areas.
