Large Pair of 19th Century French Centre Tables
An Excellent, Large Pair of French Empire Period Guéridon or Centre Tables with Original White Marble Tops c.1810-20.
The guéridons or centre antique tables with white painted finish with gilded highlights and retaining the original marble tops. The tops do not have any veins running through them and so are likely to be made from statuary marble, the most sought-after of all marbles due to its purity of colour making it ideal for sculpture. The finely proportioned table bases have a tripartite base raised on hairy paw feet, a form that was popular throughout Europe in this period. The use of fine classical ornament such as acanthus and floral paterae to the platform and Greek key carving to the stem is also typical but the quality of execution is much higher than usually encountered. The friezes of the tables employ a particularly well-executed bold beaded moulding and leaf carving.
It is very rare to encounter a pair of tables of this quality.
