Large Egyptian faience amulet Isis nursing the infant Horus Ancient Egyptian faience Isis and Horus
A good-sized celeste coloured faience amulet of Isis. The goddess is seated on an elaborate throne decorated with a cross hatch pattern, holding the infant Horus to her breast, supporting his head with her left hand. She is wearing a long close-fitting sheath dress and striated tripartite wig, surmounted by a crown in the form of her hieroglyphic name-sign, the "throne." The child Horus wears the side lock of youth and is holding his finger to his mouth. A horizontal piercing just above the throne at the back for suspension.

Ptolemaic period: Circa 4th-1st century BC.

Complete and in Very Fine condition a small repair to Horus, and a slight surface chip at the base of the throne.

Height 6.4 cms (2.5 ins).

Literature: Illustration 18: Amulets of Ancient Egypt Carol Andrews.

Provenance: Ex AS. 1990’s collection: Purchased from a London Gallery, previously in the Foxwell collection later sold at Sotheby’s.

The goddess Isis had to secretly give birth to and care for her son, Horus, in the marshes of the Nile delta to protect him from his murderous uncle, Set. This statuette depicts a tender moment of Isis nursing the infant Horus, so that one day he may overthrow Set and become king of Egypt like his father, Osiris. The hieroglyphic sign for Isis is a throne here she not only sits on a throne, but one is reproduced on her head).
Despite its size and deeply human subject, the work displays all the hallmarks of Egyptian sculpture in its monumental frontality and serene dignity. In later Christian times, the image of Isis and the infant Horus became the model for the Madonna and child.
