Large 18th Century Georgian Oak Mule Chest Coffer
-Welcome to Mersham Manor Antiques-
A wonderful large characterful George ll solid oak mule chest of peg construction.
c1750.
With five raised and fielded panels to the front, over an arrangement of drawers, the top three drawers being decorative dummie drawers over three drawers to the base.
The top with lip moulded edge lifts up to reveal a large storage area, with fitted candle box and two small drawers below.
The chest has an original and ingenious locking system for the lower drawers, there are wooden bolt-locks which are in the chest section, which are simply pushed down to lock the lower drawers.
Also another excellent and unusual feature of the chest is that the top can be lifted off very easily, which is a great advantage because of its large size and obvious weight being solid oak. Instead of fixed metal hinges the chest lid has wooden pegs which slot into holes holding it in place, but can easily be unhooked when needed to move etc.
Retaining the original handles and escutcheon, so overall in complete original condition. The lock has been removed.
The chest is large in scale, which simply makes it very stunning, plus giving a vast amount of storage space.
The overall condition is excellent antique condition. With expected general signs of age and use.
Very solid sturdy and strong.
Having developed a wonderful rich colour and glowing patina.
Bees-waxed and polished.
