Julian Gordon Mitchell Pair Mythological Oils
We are delighted to offer for sale this unusual, mythological pair of Oils on Canvas by the artist Julian Gordon Mitchell, who has signed both painting on the reverse, as is his wont. The male bears his signature in full and the femal is signed Julian G. Mitchell. The paintings were entitled by the artist 'The King and Queen of the Wood'.
The painting of the male figure, who is wearing a crown of leaves and flowers, is holding a branch in his left hand, while has right is holding a sword. He has a white square cut beard and moustache and is wearing a robe, held with a clasp on his left shoulder.The background is of naked trees.
The female portrait, depicts a young women, wearing a veiled headdress, supported by two horns. The veil hangs over her face and shoulders and in one hand she is holding a feather. She is wearing a full skirted white dress and is seated in front of a misty forest of bare trees. Both figures look as thought they have been touched by frost.
Julian Gordon Mitchell was born in 1968. He studied drawing at Heatherleys, before achieving a BA at Wolverhampton University and an MA in Fine Art at Brighton University. He comes from a family of artists, with his grandfather being the artist Arthur Croft Mitchell 1872-1958 and his great uncle being the watercolourist Arthur Croft 1828-1893. In fact his studio in Wadhurst is situated adjacent to the house that his great uncle built. He also has been lecturing on Art History at Bracknell & Wokingham College for many years.
He has exhibited since 1990 both at home and abroad, at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Oil Painters Institute, National Portrait Gallery etc. He signs either with his name in full on the front of works, on the back, with his initials, or his monogram which is a capital M in a circle.
The paintings are framed in a modern, 2 inch off white painted frame and will be supplied professioonally framed and ready to hang.
