John Senex Original Copperplate Map of Scotland

A large early 18th century copper engraved map titled 'A New Map of Scotland according to Gordon of Straloch', by John Senex. It was published in 'A New General Atlas, Containing a geographical and historical account of all the empires, kingdoms and other dominions of the world: with the natural history and trade of each country' by Daniel Browne, Thomas Taylor, et al in London 1721.
There is an impressive cartouche top right consisting of a warrior wearing a plumed helmet, a seated female figure with laurel crown, an angel blowing a long curved horn and two putti bearing the fruits of agriculture in front of a crown and shield decorated with a Lion Rampant (the coat of arms of Scotland).
John Senex (1678-1740) was a prominent English cartographer, surveyor, globemaker, and geographer. He apprenticed to the bookseller, Robert Clavell, and worked with many other mapmakers including Jeremiah Seller and Charles Price. His stock of maps would eventually be acquired by William Herbert and Robert Sayer and his globes to James Ferguson.
Dimensions: Map 58.5 x 49 cm
Frame 60.5 x 51 cm
Condition: The map is stuck to board and there is some light foxing. It is framed in a narrow gilt frame which will be sent together with the backboard if posted. The glazing will be provided and the back sealed using professional framer's paper tape if collected.
Postage & packing: Map plus frame & backboard can be packaged, boxed and sent to a UK address for £12.
