John Burr RBA ARWS ROI Watercolour The New Frock John Burr RBA ROI %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer this superb watercolour by the renowned artist John Burr, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and signed and entitled in verso on the backing board, along with his address. The painting depicts a charming domestic scene, including children, a speciality of the artist. The little girl is modelling her new pink frock, with a deeper pink sash. She has white knickerbockers, white stocking and black strap shoes. She is wearing a necklace and has a pink bow in her blonde hair. Her doll, also wearing pink is lying on a green painted stool underneath the table. Seated to the left of the table is an old gentleman, possibly her grandfather, wearing a brown coat, breeches and gaiters, with his top hat and scarf rest on the table behind him. Her mother is standing next to him, while her little brother is sitting at the table, which is set for a light meal.

Interestingly, to our knowledge, the artist painted two more versions of this painting, one virtually exact, apart from some slight change to the background and in oils, which was sold by Christie's in 1993 for £5,500 and was dated 1886. The other, also in oils, shows the young girl standing on a chair to show off her dress, which is in Sheffield Museums. This one, along with 26 other paintings by John Burr are in the National Collection and can be viewed at ArtUK.org, by putting the artist's name into google.

John Burr was born in Edinburgh in 1831. He and his younger brother Alexander Hohenlohe Burr ROI (1837-1898) trained at the Trustees' Academy (now Edinburgh College of Art) under Scott Lauder and both settled in London in 1861. Whilst his brother worked almost exclusively in oils, John was skilled in both oils and watercolours.

He exhibited between 1862-1892 in London some 102 paintings, including 18 at the Royal Academy and 35 at Suffolk Street. He was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1875, a Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1883 and an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1883. He was elected President of the Society of British Artists in 1886, but resigned in 1886, to be succeeded by Jmaes A. McNeil Whistler. There was a sale of his works at Christie's in 1883.

He is listed in The Dictionary of Scottish Painters, The Dictionary of British Artists, The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artist by H. Mallalieu, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and his London exhibitions are listed in Graves Dictionary. There is also a biography of him on Wikipedia.

Census records show that in early 1861, he was living with his widowed mother and brother at 32 Dundas Street, Edinburgh, but later that year both brothers moved to London. Somehow he managed to avoid being listed in any Census records after this date, although he obviously was in London as the address on this painting is given as 86 Adelaide Road London N.W., which is in the Swiss Cottage/St. John's Wood area. However, in 1891 his brother Alexander was living at 36 Gloucester Road, where, presumably at his brother's house, John died on the 8th January 1893.

The painting has been newly overmounted in cream mountboard and is framed in its original ornate Victorian frame.
