Johann F.W.T. Roux 1806-1880 Pastel Portrait

We are delighted to offer for sale this superbly executed portrait pastel on vellum, which is almost photographic in its execution, by the German artist Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Theodor Roux, who has signed the pastel in the lower right hand corner Roux a H. Cafsel. H. Cafsel stands for Hesse-Kassel, a province of Prussia.
The pastel which is in a drawn oval, depicts a gentleman in georgian style clothes, with a velvet collared jacket, a pale yellow waistcoat, a high collared shirt with a black stock and a blue moire silk sash. On the breat of the jacket, he is wearing the Knight Grand Cross Star of the Royal Guelphic Order, which was established by the Prince Regent, later George IV, in the UK in 1815. He discontinued the use of the order in the UK in 1837, but it continued as a Hanoverian Order.
Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Theodor Roux was born in Gotha on 23rd September 1806. He was a pastellist and the nephew of the noted pastellist Jakob Wilhelm Christian Roux. He died in Kassel on 16th August 1880.
There are some auction records for pastels by this artist, with 13 listings at artnet, 12 at artprice and 5 at findartinfo primarily for sales in Germany and Denmark.
