James Wright b.1935 Oil on Canvas Landscape
We are offering for sale this beautifully painted traditional landscape oil on canvas by the artist James Wright, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and entitled it verso on the stretcher, 'Pond at Great Massingham'. Great Massingham is a very pretty village in Norfolk, which has several large ponds, some of which were created as fish ponds for an Augustinian monastery. The painting depicts the pond on a bright winter day, with the trees bare of leaves, except some, which are clad in evergreen ivy. There is a faint mist amongst the trees in the background and a thin skin of ice around the edge of the pond.
James Wright, who was born in Peterborough in 1935 and now lives in Moulton, Lincolnshire, is a self-taught artist and an exponent of the traditional English landscape style. He was teaching woodwork and technical drawing at a boy's school until the late 1970s, when he took the brave step of becoming a professional full-time artist. His early work concentrated on painting the once busy fishing villages around the coast of Norfolk, Cornwall and Sussex. Although he then started painting traditional landscapes, mainly featuring the East Anglian and Lincolnshire countryside.
Since that time, his work has become increasing collected and many of his paintings have been issued as limited edition prints.
In 2006, his book 'James Wright's East Anglia' was published by Halsgrove, containing 120 reproductions of his work.
Auction results achieved for his work may be found at artprice (20 listings), arcadja (2) and findartinfo (7). Similar sized paintings to this one are selling on google for £1,000.
The painting is framed in a 2 5/8" swept gilt frame and is ready to hang.
