James Taylor 1925-2000 Oil Night Couple Sleeping James Taylor 1925-2000 English %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are very plaesed to offer this oil painting on canvas laid to board and on a stretcher, by the renowned English artist James Taylor, who has signed the painting TAYLOR in the lower right hand corner. The provenance for the painting is with the Lefevre Gallery of Bruton Street, London W! and bears two of their labels. The painting is entitled on the label 'Night, the couple asleep', and you can see a man with his arm around the woman, both asleep.

James Taylor was born in England in 1925, although we have seen his birth year listed as 1930, we cannot verify either, as without knowing where he was born, there are too many people with the same name to be certain. We are quoting the most often seen dates for him, which are 1925-2000.

He initially trained at London's Anglo-French Art Centre, founded by Alfred Rozelaar-Green, which operated in St. John's Wood from 1946-1951. Rozelaar-Green invited prominent French and British artists to lecture here, such as Fern and Leger,Andre Lhote, Henry Moore and Francis Bacon. Taylor subsequently studied with Leger in Paris. There he became associated with the La Jeune Peinture (Young Painting) movement that was centred around French painter Paul Rebeyrolle and espoused a Social Realist opposition to non-figurative painting. In 1957 the art critic for The times anaklysed the contradictions within the new movement, in relation to Taylor's art specifically.

Taylor participated in the La Nouvelle Vague exhibition at Galerie Framond in 1955 and, in the same year, was awarded the Ptrix de la Jeune Peinture. In 1959 he received the Grand Prix des Peintres Etrangers du Musee d'Art Moderne. Taylor held solo exhibitions at the Galerie Monique de la Groote, Paris, in 1956 and with London's Lefevre Gallery on seven occasions between 1957 and 1969, thereby dating this painting to between these dates. Taylor's early critical success was matched by strong sales of his work. In 1959 art writer G. S. Whittet noted in The Studio, 'how, though only thirty-four, this young English artist who has lived and worked in France for several years has had the remarkable distinction of selling every picture he has exhibited either in France or in England.'

Taylor's painting of The House of Derain at Chambourcy was acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria in 1956.

In 1960, our late Queen and Prince Philip selected eleven paintings by modern British painters to adorn the walls of some rooms in Windsor Castle recently redecorated in modern style by Sir Hugh Casson. A painting of French Rooftops entitled 'Les Toits' by James Taylor is one of them.

As well as these, there are four on his paintings in the National Collection, which may be viewed at ArtUK.org.

James Taylor relocated to Ibiza, Spain circa 1970, where he lived in the region of Santa Eulalia and is described as a poet and painter. There are examples of his paintings online, some of which are in a boutique hotel in Ibiza owned by an art collector, who specialises in Ibizan art. We understand that he died in 2000.

The painting has been newly framed in a 2 1/4 inch black lacquer frame with ochre lines, which suits it very well. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
