It is with great pleasure that I offer this very fine London made 18th century longcase clock of the very best quality which is in amazing original condition.
London antique clocks of this period are always of excellent quality as it was the capital city of the richest country in the world at the time. This prosperity resulted in items being made to the highest possible standards using the very best raw materials imported from all over the world . Evidence of this quality is that many of these excellent clocks are still in everyday use today - at a fraction of their true price when new.
As always there were customers requiring something extra special and were willing to pay a premium for that service.
This particular antique clock is a fine example of such a clock which uses choice timbers of excellent grain and colour. Of course it is the extensive use if exotic woods to inlay the case that elevates this clock to the next level.
Please study the images to study the quality and note that the sides of the case are also inlaid with cross banding.
The sides are glazed to allow the movement to be seen.
The clock has typical London features such as quarter reeded columns to the trunk and full brass filled pillars to the hood with brass capitals.
This clock was made by Thomas Dale of London and this clock would have been made circa 1760 .
The 8 day duration weight driven 5 pillar movement is of high quality construction and strikes the hours on a bell.It has the facility for chime silent unusually placed above 12 o'clock. The 12 x 16 inch arched brass dial is particularly pleasing with a clear readout and the makers name displayed on a boss in the arch. The clock retains its original brass cased weights and brass strap pendulum.Even the original winding crank is present.
This clock was sourced in untouched but very dirty condition and what you see in the images is the result of sympathetic restoration which has resulted in a truly beautiful antique clock.
My cabinet maker has spent almost two weeks gently cleaning the case and then giving it 3 coats of the best microcrystaline wax resulting in an outstanding ,but original, finish whilst retaining the most wonderful patina.Re polished clocks simply cannot offer this type of finish nor the depth of colour and shade.
The pictures do not flatter the item and it is much better in the flesh.
Prospective buyers are urged to view this clock to see how nice it really is.
The overall condition is outstanding with only the odd age related mark as can be expected. At the present time this clock represents exceptional value for money .
It is an impressive piece being 7ft 10inches tall to the top of the hood,20 inches at its widest point and 9 1/2 inches deep. The centre of the trunk is only 13 1/2 inches wide.
I would encourage interested parties to view the clock and my limited photographic skill do it no favours at all and certainly do not show the quality of the finish.
My direct contact details are at the bottom of most of my listings should any interested party wish to get in touch.
