Hunt & Roskell Victorian Silver Chest
This wonderful large Victorian silver chest will make a beautiful storage piece for any home. The brass plate on the front internal edge shows the maker as “Hunt & Roskell, late Storr & Mortimer, Goldsmiths & Silversmiths to the Queen, 156 New Bond Street, London”. The partnership name change to Hunt & Roskell occurred in 1843, which dates the box to the second half of the 19th century. The brass lock plate is engraved with “Barrons Patent” and a crown, Robert Barron being an English locksmith who invented the double-acting tumbler lock in the late 18th century. This beautiful box is bound with metal on all sides and corners, each piece being painted with dark red centre panels and outlined in gilt paint, with two large worn gilt painted metal handles at each end. Inside, the lid is padded and lined with red fabric, with marbled paper edging, and it has a stay hinge on the right side which keeps the lid open when fully raised. The top is very slightly domed and the chest is slightly raised at the bottom by wooden runners attached at the front and back, allowing air to circulate beneath.
Dating to the mid 19th century, this is made of oak and originates from London, England.
In good age related condition, there is some wear to the runners underneath and there is no key available, but it is otherwise a solid piece with a lovely patina.
