In General

A stunningly designed, superb quality, five rung, high ladderback, Heal's of London oak armchair to an Arts and Crafts design originally created by the renowned designer Philip Clissett and architect James MacLaren c.1890 - known and documented as the "Clissett Highback".

This Armchair appeared in the Heals of London Catalogue for 1907 and was manufactured by William Bartlett of High Wycombe. Heals appears to have started buying these chairs in 1900 and stocked them until 1920. The very attractive warm golden rush seat - the chair has been re - rushed more recently, is in excellent condition and the chair has a wonderful original finish, patina and feel.

Comprising a five rung high ladderback armchair with a double box stretcher which is not narrowed at the ends, it has small rounded feet on the front legs, stepped decoration on the tops of the front legs and finials all as per Philip Clissett's classic original Arts and Crafts design.

The wonderful turned arm supports are influenced by the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements. The highback, with very pretty acorn shaped finials was influenced by the stunning Shaker Chairs of the 19th Century. The high ladderbacks are also of the English Arts and Crafts style of chairs of the time. Ladderback chairs were influenced by the architect James MacLaren and became popular amongst the Arts and Crafts Movement.

Its stunning "modern" Arts and Crafts design will work well in contemporary as well as period interiors.

Philip Clissett (1817-1913) was a Victorian chair designer and antique furniture maker who is celebrated for influencing and inspiring the English Arts and Crafts Movement. Clissett's chairs were also used by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in early commissions. Clissett's chairs can be found in various Museums including the V & A and the Geffrye Museum.

Heal's is a famous London British furniture and furniture retail company founded in 1810. For over two centuries it has promoted modern design and employed talented young designers. Heal's is still located in its wonderful flagship store on Tottenham Court Road, London W1 and in 7 other locations.
