Verge escapement

A late 18th century, Paris verge in a fine gold case with a beautiful enamel.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance bridge, large silver regulator disk, four round pillars and blued steel screws. Signed ‘Gudin, A PARIS” .

Complete and running well.

DIAL : Original white enamel dial, signed as the movement, In perfect condition.

Gold hand hour hand but with later gilt minute.

CASE : A beautiful gold case in very good condition. Rose gold highlighted with green enamel leaves and orange & white flowers, with a white enamel border on the back surrounding a beautiful enamel pastoral scene.
No marks except a maker’s mark on the stem (JDA?).

The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely, though the gold catch button has worn through. Otherwise the gold itself is in fine condition.

There are a few small pieces of the enamel missing on the bezel and borders. The plaque has some light surface scratches, and a piece missing on the bottom left hand edge. Good high dome crystal.

Gudin is recorded in Paris in about 1770.

PROVENANCE : From the Landrock collection of antique clocks and watches.
Horst Landrock was a German watchmaker and collector. During the mid 20th century he brought together an extensive collection of old timepieces of all kinds, which was one of the most important private collections in Germany. Free worldwide postage.
