George V Silver Bowl, Northern Goldsmiths, 1931
This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver two handled bowl. The bowl has a low pedestal foot, panelled decoration on the lower part of the body, a central ridge around the body, a gadrooned rim and c-scroll handles.
The bowl was probably originally intended as a sugar bowl but is very versatile and could be used for sauces on the table, to hold nuts or snacks, be filled with potpourri or simply displayed as a decorative item in its own right.
The bowl was made by or for the Northern Goldsmiths Company of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and assayed in Birmingham in 1931, the Newcastle assay office having been closed down in 1883. With a history dating back to 1778, Northern Goldsmiths remain an iconic Newcastle retailer today.
Condition is good, with just one very small ding in the panelled section near to one of the handles and the regular superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 90 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 10cm / 3.9ins in diameter across the top rim, 15cm / 5.9ins from handle to handle and 7.7cm / 3ins high to the top of the handles. It weighs a substantial 103.2g / 3.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the body are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter G for 1931 and the N G Co makers' mark for the Northern Goldsmiths Company. The underside of the base is stamped with the retail mark for The Northern Goldsmiths Company.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the bowl.
