George V Silver Bird Claw Sugar Tongs, 1926
This is a good pair of George V Sterling Silver Bird Claw Sugar Tongs from the nineteen twenties. The arms of the tongs are plain whilst the claw grips have a feather and scale effect on them. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sugar tongs are made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and date to 1926. Originally founded in Birmingham in 1800, the firm transferred to Sheffield in 1832. It remained under Hutton family control into the 1930s when it was finally absorbed into James Dixon & Sons.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 95 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 10cm / 3.9ins long and weigh a respectable 20.3g / 0.72oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of one arm, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter II for 1926 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
