George III Silver Table Spoon, Wm. London, 1765
Here we have a fine quality early George III Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the Hanoverian pattern with a Shell Fancy Back to the bowl. The spoon has the initials L S E engraved in 18th century style on the underside of the upturned end of the stem.
The spoon is made in London by silversmith William London and dates to 1765. William London was a specialist spoon maker who registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1762 and remained active throughout the 1760s and then seems to have mysteriously disappeared, perhaps passing away at a comparatively young age.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of tiny pits in the bowl and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 250 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The table spoon is 20.5cm / 8.1ins long and weighs in at 69.9g / 2.46oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are bottom struck on the underside of the stem and are very clear to read, which is often not the case with spoons from this period. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter K for 1765 and the script W.L makers' mark for William London.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoon.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
