George III Silver Scallop Shell Butter Dish 1782
A Georgian silver scallop shell serving dish set on two cast whelk shell feet. Bright cut engraved detail to the rim and inner edge of the shell. A raised medallion engraved with a family crest of a stag within a bright cut border. Hallmarks are rubbed but crowned leopard town mark for London is very faint and the date letter is legible for 1782.
I have also a true pair of very similar dishes (but not identical) with the same decoration and family crest and the hallmarks match town and date, with maker mark for John Kidder.
The dish measures 12cm (4 3/4") by 14.2cm (5 9/16") wide and 2.5cm (1") high. It weighs 74g / 2.4ozt.
Condition is very good: there is a small seam of solder visible to the reverse along the join of the shell area and the flat plate, this is not evidenced on the inside. No damage or dents. A very small scuff/pinch to the very tip of the rim of the flat handle. Marks are rubbed on the reverse. Very light handling wear to the engraved areas and raised medallion. Some light surface pitting to the bowl along the troughs. Payment is accepted by bank transfer, card payments (via an online invoice, I'm afraid we cannot take payments over the telephone), Paypal and UK personal cheque. If you prefer to pay by Stripe please go to our website where we offer that option and additionally options to "Pay in 30 days" and to pay in 3 instalments, all securely supported.
Price includes UK shipping. Worldwide shipping is also available, please ask for a cost.
We wish to ensure all our customers are happy with their purchases and offer a full no quibble return policy for all items returned within 14 days. We ask that returns are notified within 7 days where possible. Return postage is the buyer's responsibility in terms of cost and safeguarding the item through transit.
