George III Silver Sauce Boat, Wm. Cattell, 1772
Here we have an elegant George III Sterling Silver Sauce Boat. The sauce boat stands on three hoof feet and has a gadrooned upper rim. The initials F T M are engraved on the handle in the style of the 1770s.
The sauce boat is made in London by silversmith William Cattell and dates to 1772. Cattell registered his mark in February 1771 and remained in business until at least the late 1780s. His make is not a common one but is most frequently seen on sauce boats, gravy boats and brandy warmers.
Condition is very good, with just one very small crease in the body below the handle plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected in an item that is 250 years old! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sauce boat is 12.4cm / 4.9ins from lip to handle, 6.7cm / 2.6ins across and 8.5cm / 3.3ins high to the top of the handle. It weighs in at a substantial 130.4g / 4.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the body are somewhat rubbed but can still be deciphered. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter R for 1772 and the W C makers' mark for William Cattell.
