George III Bright Cut Silver Sugar Tongs, J. Lambe
Here we have an elegant pair of George III Bright Cut Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs. The tongs are in the Old English pattern but raised to a higher level by the exquisite bright cut engraving along both arms and down the backs of the bowls. The initials S I M are engraved in 18th century style on the curve of the tongs.
The sugar tongs are made in London by renowned silversmith John Lambe and date to 1803. John Lambe was active from the late 1760s through until the early 1800s. He was principally a spoon and flatware maker and has the distinction of being the earliest spoon maker of whom a portrait has survived.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you have to expect after 220 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 13.7cm / 5.4ins long and weigh in at a very respectable 27.5g / 0.97oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the insides of the arms, are well struck and clear to read. One one arm they show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter H for 1803 and the George III duty mark. The other arm has the I.L makers' mark for John Lambe.
Shipping in the UK is £5 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
