We are offering for sale this pair of oil paintings on board by the artist George Gregory, who has signed both paintings in the lower left hand corner and dated them 1917. One painting shows a brigantine heeling over in a choppy sea, with a schooner in the distance. The other shows a couple of sailing barges on a calm sea, again with a schooner in the background.

GEORGE GREGORY, 1848-1939, was the son of Charles Gregory R.W.S. 1810-1896 and they both painted in oil and watercolours, marine subjects and occasional landscapes. George's eyesight was unfortunately damaged in a fire at the age of seven, which made sustained painting difficult. Despite this, over his lifetime, he produced a large volume of work. He was born and died on the Isle of Wight at Newport, although he spent most of his life in East Cowes.

According to Census records, he spent all of his life on the island, although in 1881, he was a boarder at the Oxford Hotel in Margate, where he could have been on a painting trip. He lived with his parents up to this time at 11 Medina Terrace, Northwood, Isle of Wight, and up to 1911, the last year that the Census can be viewed, he was living with his sister's family at Medina House, Union Street, East Cowes.

The majority of his marine paintings were of the seas around the Island that he loved and the Solent, although he did produce the odd Continental landscape. He did not exhibit in London.

There are five of his paintings in the National Collection, which can be viewed at Artuk.org, 2 at the Isle of Wight Council Heritage Service, 1 at Kirklees Museum, 1 at Brighton & Hove Museums and Galleries and 1 at Portsmouth Museum.

We have read that his talent was such that he was asked by Queen Victoria to teach her children to paint while they were staying at Osborne House.

The paintings are framed in 1 3/4 inch wooden gilded frames with a green painted inser. They will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
