French Gilt Bronze Candelabrum by Delafontaine
We are delighted to offer for sale this delightful candelabrum by the well known Parisian foundry of August-Maximilien Delafontaine, which dates to pre 1884.
The candelabrum stands on triform legs with paw feet, and floral and foliate decoration at the top of the legs. There are three masks of Bacchus below a column with trailed leaves for half its length and reeded for the remainder, topped by five branches with candle sconces. The whole is topped by a mermaid surmount, holding chains, which also loop between the other branches.
The foundry was established in the late 18th century by Jean-Baptiste-Maximilien Delafontaine and, in 1870, was located at 10 Rue de l'Universite. The firm produced decorative works of art of the highest quality. This candelabrum was cast by the grandson of the founder, Auguste-Maximilien Delafontaine, 1813-1892, hence the AD and mark on one of the feet. He was succeeded by his son Henri-Maximilien in 1884 and the foundry close its doors in 1905. There are sculptures in the Louvre cast by this foundry.
Please see the photographs as they form part of the item description.
