Ethel Wright Portrait Admiral Sir A. Heneage 1895 Ethel Wright ROI RP %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering for sale this very well executed bust length portrait in pastels by the renowned society portrait painter and artist Ethel Wright ROI RBA SWA, who has signed the portrait in the lower right hand corner and dated and inscribed it in the upper right Admiral Sir A. Heneage 1895.

Admiral Sir Algernon Charles Fieschi Heneage GCB (19 March 1833 – 10 June 1915) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, The Nore. Dubbed "Pompo," he was known for his immaculate dress and his white-glove inspections of the ships under his command.

Heneage was appointed a lieutenant in the Royal Navy in 1854. In 1861, he was commander of HMS Falcon, part of the West Africa Squadron. Promoted to captain in 1866, he took command of HMS Rodney in 1867 and then HMS Warrior in 1881. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Station in 1887 and Commander-in-Chief, The Nore in 1892.

Following the succession of King Edward VII, he was among several retired admirals advanced to Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB) in the 1902 Coronation Honours list published on 26 June 1902, and received the insignia in an investiture on board the royal yacht Victoria and Albert outside Cowes on 15 August 1902, the day before the fleet review held there to mark the coronation.
He died in 1915 and is buried at Brompton Cemetery.

Please note before anyone notices that the star that he wears on his left chest is not that of a GCB, but a KCB, and the same applies to the cross on the ribbon round his neck, he was awarded his KCB in 1892, 3 years before this portrait, so is accurate at that time.

We do not know what the three medals that he wore on his left are for, but the silver medal with the blue ribbon on his right side, is the Royal Human Society's Silver Medal which was awarded to him in 1861 for jumping into a shark infested River Gambia in Sierra Leone, to save one of his sailors from drowning. There is a fuller biography available online at the Dreadought Prohect.

Ehtel Wright ROI RP RBA, was born in London in 1866. She was a private pupil of the artist Seymour Lucas (1849-1923) and later, on the advice of Solomon J. Solomon (1860-1927), she spent a year studying at the Academie Julian in Paris, being accompanied there by Mrs. Alice Havers-Morgan.

She became a favourite society portrait painter in oils and also in pastel and was herself drawn in pastel by Solomon J. Solomon. She was also painted by Arthur Jacker (1858-1919) and, in fact, sat for him of 50 occasions, and these paintings may be seen on google. She was engaged in 1893 to Prince Pierre Troubetskoi, but later married the theatrical impresario Armiger A. Barcley in 1898, who she divorced in 1910. In 1899, she had a fire at her temporary studio and lost 8 months work of paintings intended for the Royal Academy.

Circa 1900 she went to America, taking a selection of her portraits with her and working there for several years painting portraits, before returning to the UK.

In the 1910s, she exhibited for a while with the Rhthym Group which was started in 1912, but in the 1920s and 30s, she produced many flower paintings, as well as a few portraits.

She exhibited 52 paintings at the Royal Academy, 68 at eh Royal Oil Painters Institute, 5 at the Royal Institute of Portrait Painters, 5 at the Royal Society of British Artists and also in the provinces. Her studio was: Studio 24, Stafford Place Studios, Buckingham Palace Gate, London.

She was elected a Member of the Society of Women Artists in 1897, a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1912, and a Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1917.

She was a great supporter of the Women Social and Political Union and her painting of Christabel Pankhurst which she donated to the cause of Women's Suffrage for sale at 100 guineas, is in the National Portrait Gallery. It was purchased by Una Dugdale Duval, who tried to donate it to the Nationhal Portrait Gallery in both 1966 and 1973, but they finally accepted it in 2011 bequesthed by Una Duval's daughter Elizabeth Weir, according to her mother's wishes.. It seems that Miss Pankhurst was not an acceptable subject for many years!

There are four of her paintings, including the one of Christabel Pankhurst available to view at artUK.org.

Along with her portraits of notables, she painted a series of paintings of pierrots, some of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy. Some of her RA paintings include Bon Jour Pierrot, The Prodigal, Rejected, Folly, Echo, Lelies, The Song of Ages and portraits of Lady Ada Godolphin Osborne and Mr. Wolff Joel. They also declined to accept the portrait of Christabel Pankhurst.

There is a section, with several plates, in the book Suffrage and the Arts edited by Miranda Garrett & Zoe Thomas about Ethel Wright, her career and her involvement with the WSPU.

Ethel Wright died in Kensington in July 1939 at the age of 75.
