Antique Equestrian Oil Painting The Hunting Stud After Herring Circa 1900

A fine antique British sporting oil painting on canvas depicting four hunting horses with grooms and huntsmen inside a traditional timber stable.

Dating to approximately 1900, the painting follows The Hunting Stud, the celebrated 1845 composition by John Frederick Herring Senior, now held in the Tate collection.

Subject

One grey and three bay hunters stand within a warm, atmospheric stable interior. Their grooms prepare the horses for the day, with one examining a raised hoof, another attending to the tack and a further figure steadying a horse by its bridle.

Two huntsmen wearing scarlet coats and black riding hats confer in the background. Their bright jackets introduce strong colour and connect the quiet stable preparations with the sporting activity to follow.

The scene provides an appealing record of British country-house and equestrian tradition. It focuses upon the care, discipline and knowledge required behind the hunt rather than the action of the chase itself.

Composition and Technique

The unknown British School painter demonstrates careful observation of equine anatomy, musculature and stance.

Fine brushwork describes the horses, bridles, tack and harness, while softer strokes create the straw bedding, timber beams and shadowed background. Subtle highlights across the horses' backs, necks and flanks suggest the reflective sheen of carefully groomed coats.

The palette combines chestnut, bay, ochre, sienna and warm umber. Cream highlights illuminate the grey horse, manes and straw, while the scarlet hunting coats provide vivid compositional accents.

Attribution

The painting is unsigned and was produced by an unidentified British School artist.

It is catalogued as after John Frederick Herring Senior because it follows his recognised composition The Hunting Stud of 1845.

The word after describes a later painting based upon Herring's established design. It does not claim that this canvas was executed, supervised or authorised by Herring or his studio.

John Frederick Herring Senior

John Frederick Herring Senior lived from 1795 to 1865 and was one of the leading British equestrian painters of the 19th century.

Herring initially worked as a coach driver and became known as the artist coachman. His practical experience with horses informed his convincing treatment of their anatomy, movement and character.

He became especially admired for paintings of racehorses, hunters, coaching scenes, stable interiors and rural animals. His compositions were widely reproduced as sporting prints and continued to influence later British painters.
