Champion of the Seas was the second largest clipper ship destined for the Liverpool, England - Melbourne, Australia passenger service. Champion was ordered by James Baines of the Black Ball Line from Donald McKay. She was launched 19 April 1854 and was abandoned 3 January 1877, off Cape Horn.
Champion of the Seas set a record for the fastest day's run in 24 hours: 465 nautical miles (861 km) noon to noon 10–11 December 1854 under the command of Captain Alexander Newlands (which translates into 19.5 knots). This record stood until August 1984, nearly 130 years.
The Black Ball Line was founded in 1852 by James Baines & Thomas MacKay, Liverpool as a regular packet service to Australia at the time of the gold rush. There were also two junior partners, Joseph Greaves and John Taylor. However, the company also traded to other parts of the world, notably to the Crimea and to India for transport duties.
Other services ran to China and New Zealand. The Black Ball Line traded successfully until 1866 when Barned's Bank collapsed and the company which was one of its main debtors was forced to sell many of its ships. The Line carried on until 1871 when it ceased trading. Baines and his partners also owned several ships separate from each other.
The Black Ball Line had a contract to deliver mail to Australia, This line carried more passengers to Australia than any other line. The Black Ball Line at various times owned more than fifteen other Saint John ships as well as several ships built by Donald McKay of East Boston.
These vessels were comfortable, had well ventilated quarters for steerage passengers, state rooms for cabin passengers, smoking rooms, decorated saloons and were strongly rigged.
Circa Edwardian early 20th century dated 1902.
Set in such a traditional wooden frame.
