Early Verge Ebony Bracket Clock - Francis Tantum Tantum Verge repeating %%alt5%%
This is a fine and very rare ebony veneered verge bracket / mantle antique clock by the most eminent of early Derbyshire Clockmakers - Francis Tantum ,Loscoe,Fecit (Derbyshire) circa 1690.
Bracket antique clocks of this age and quality are normally the preserve of the great London makers from the golden age of clockmaking and it it particularly rare to find such an example from a provincial maker.
In this particular instance the maker is Francis Tantum of Loscoe who is fine maker who is highly regarded in the locality, and in recent years nationally , due to the quality of his work.
It is known that he made his will in 1718 and died in 1720 but little else is known prior to that with some reports of him being born in 1660s .The son of a successful gentleman farmer he was succeeded by his son John and also has a brother Jonathan and nephew Daniel who were also clockmakers
It is unknown to whom he was apprenticed but it is suggested that John Kirk of Eppistone , Nottinghamshire who later worked in London.
It is believed that Tantum taught James Woolley of nearby Codnor who also made clocks of a very high standard . There is a common theme running amongst the plethora of good clockmakers clockmakers in this small area on the Derby shire / Nottinghamshire borders.
Although several high quality clocks are known by Tantum there are no bracket clocks recorded . The only other one known by a local maker is a very similar clock by Joseph Kirk , Hardstoft (near Harwick Hall). I firmly believe that this clock is the only one in existence (or manufactured ) by this maker.
Being a Derbyshire man I lived for 20 years approximately 2 miles from Loscoe and Codnor and have had the benefit of viewing several private collections of these local clocks and I have never seen or heard mention of any bracket antique clocks. This has to be the Holy Grail of such collectors or indeed collectors of early provincial bracket clocks. It is most certainly rarer than a Tompion or Knibb!
In relation to this clock the quality is absolutely superb with the five finned pillar 8 day fusee movement with original verge escapement having pull repeat on two bells. The back plate is fully engraved and signed by the maker . It shows outstanding craftsmanship with the fusee stop lever worked as is the of the bell spring. The pillars , crown and contrate wheels are ringed as are all the movement pillars .
The well executed 6 inch square dial has winged cherub head spandrels with fine engraving in between on the dial sheet. It has a well matted centre with a mock pendulum aperture. The silvered and engraved chapter ring is signed by the maker.
The small caddy topped case is constructed in oak and veneered in ebony . It is glazed on all sides to allow the movement to be seen with wooden fretts front and rear.It is decorated with fine gilded repouse mounts and carrying handle so that the clock can be moved from room to room.
This clock would no doubt have been a special order by a wealthy client and it is interesting to note the idler wheel behind the dial to allow the pull repeat cord to run to the bottom of the clock . It now runs through the side.
This particular clock which is only 12 inches tall to the top of the case and 14 inches with the handle raised , 9 wide and 6 inches deep . Its small size is shown in the photographs . It appears to retain its original blued steel hands.
As can be seen from the images this clock is in a remarkable state of preservation for its great age and can certainly be displayed in the home of the most discerning client. The replaced pierced sound fretts are very delicate
Like all antiques of this age there is the odd shrinkage crack and brown is showing through the wood in parts , all of which is very reassuring . For my tastes the condition is perfect .
This is a genuine and original clock and I offer a full money back guarantee to this end. Its small size ensures that it will fit into any home.
Any potential clients are very welcome to view the clock prior to purchase (or pay on delivery)to ensure that they are satisfied with their purchase.
This clock is much nicer in the flesh and looks superb .
