This is a very good quality small rosewood colonial military writing / deed / vanity box, circa 1880.

This is a very good quality small rosewood colonial military writing / deed / vanity box, circa 1880. The outer box is decorated with profuse brass strapping to all sides of the box. To the sides are the flush mounted military brass carrying handles. To the front, there is a brass diamond shape escutcheon which houses behind the original “Birmingham” stamped brass lock. The lock is in good working order and there is also a working key. The interesting interior boasts multiple compartments (both visible and hidden secret compartments). The central removable tray reveals further compartments below. Much of the interior is constructed for easy removal. Interestingly, the box comes with associated paperwork relating to “Doss’s Perfumery Works” Calcutta, India. There is further paperwork, which is possibly in Bengali or Hindi language but we are not sure. The interior and exterior is completely original and is missing no parts.
Condition Report
The box is in very good condition and is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the exterior and leading edges of the box and brass strapping but nothing significant considering the age of the item. There is an excellent colour and patination to the timber. The original lock is in good working order and there is a working key. The hinges are in good working order. Free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use. The interior and exterior is completely original and is missing no parts.
