Here we have an outstanding early Victorian Mahognay chair c1840. The chair has stunning colour and patina. Made from the finest planks of solid Cuban Mahogany this chair by repute once resided in Lumley Castle home of the Lumley family since 1389 bio below. A version of the family crest is beautifully painted in the caruoche on the back. The seat is well shaped and dished and the legs are also well shaped and solid. Lumley Castle's family history began with the Lumley family, who converted their manor into the current castle in 1389 under Sir Ralph Lumley. After Sir Ralph was executed for plotting against King Henry IV, the castle was briefly forfeited before returning to the Lumley family through his grandson, Thomas, in 1421. The family continued to own the castle through various generations, making alterations and hosting notable guests like King James VI, before it was sold in 1976 to be converted into a hotel.
