Burr Walnut Writing Desk


A wonderful quality burr walnut writing desk of generous proportions by Gill and Reigate of London. Of very good construction in solid walnut with beautiful burr walnut veneers. The top is fitted with a sumptuous brown leather writing surface. Beneath sits an arrangement of one long central drawer flanked by banks of 3 graduated drawers. All drawer fronts are cross banded and are fitted with their original brass handles, they are lockable and keys are supplied. The whole desk stands on 6 elegant cabriole legs with carving to their knees and feet. The desk is nicely finished to the sides and the rear so that it could be free-standing within a room if desired. It is offered for sale in excellent condition with a lovely depth of colour and patina.

The firm of Gill & Reigate was founded in 1899, and by 1901, trading at 85 Oxford Street, London, they described themselves as 'Dealers in Antique & Modern Furniture, Artistic Decorators and Upholsterers'. They were decorators to King George V. The firm appears to have lasted until 1958, then trading at Arlington House, Arlington Street.
During the period 1915-1920 the firm were engaged on the restoration and furnishing of Sulgrave Manor, under the direction of the architect Sir Reginald Blomfield.
