An attractive art nouveau oak and silver mounted presentational casket, fully hallmarked, with stylised handles, swags and ventral panel inscribed "Presented to James Holmes by members of Cathays Liberal Club & Institute & Friends March 5th 1907"

James Holmes was a member of the Independent Labour Party and full time organiser for the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants (ASRS). He moved the decisive motion at the 1899 TUC Congress which led to the formation of the Labour Representation Committee. He was one of the key personalities involved in the 1900 strike on the Taff Vale Railway.
