Boer War Campaign Chest C 1900 Boer war campaign %%alt5%%
A campaign chest formerly belonging to Major William Oliver Prichard of the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers. Prichard joined the British Army as a second Lieutenant on 24th April 1897 with the South Wales Borderers. His battalion sailed for South Africa on 3rd February 1900 to take part in the Boer War. Shipping records show that Lt Prichard later sailed back from South Africa to England on October 7th on board the Brittanic. He survived the war and was later badly injured in the First world war - by this time he had moved across to the 1st battalion, and he later retired as a Major. He trod in the footsteps of history as he joined a very famous battalion - the 2nd battalion of the 24th Foot (re-named the South Wales Borderers in 1881) were the infamous battalion of soldiers who defended the mission station at Rorke’s Drift in January 1879, later immortalised in the film ‘Zulu’. When he joined the same battalion, just 18 years later, stories of the battle would still be fresh in the minds of the soldiers, and he would no doubt have been very proud to be part of such an infamous regiment. The chest itself is in the original black paint with the original white lettering to the top. With iron handles to each end for ease of carrying and supporting metal straps around the bottom and edges to survive the rigours of transportation, the chest remains in lovely condition. The time worn paint and lettering are very pleasing and the original retailers label is still present - showing York House, 15 Regent Street, London, this was the location at the time of the Junior Army and Navy Stores. A small amount of old red sealing wax can be seen to the top. It is likely that young Lieutenant Prichard purchased the chest for the voyage to South Africa when his battalion were sent to war.
