An Arts & Crafts refectory dining table with a pair of benches all made in English oak by Martin "Lizardman" Dutton circa 1950. One bench is signed with a discretely carved lizard to the end support.
Provenance this table and benches were originally made for the old Grammar School known as The Friary, Richmond, North Yorkshire. In more recent times they were used in the Lower Dining Hall and Lower Library of the Richmond School, North Yorkshire.
Martin "Lizardman" Dutton (1921-2009) of Huby, near York, was a Robert Thompson apprentice and craftsman during the 1940's. He signed his antique furniture by carving a lizard.
