Art Deco Powder Bowl w/ Silver Lid, B'ham, 1950
This is an attractive Art Deco Cut Glass Powder Bowl with a Sterling Silver lid. The body of the bowl is decorated with a cross and thumbprint pattern and the base is star cut. The silver lid has broad and narrow bands of engine turned decoration with a blank shield shaped cartouche. The interior is gold washed.
The bowl is made in Birmingham by the Daniel Manufacturing Company and dates to 1950. Although principally associated with the 1920s and 1930s, Art Deco remained the dominant style in the immediate post war years, only gradually giving way to Mid-Century Modernism as the fifties progressed. The Daniel Manufacturing Company was founded in Birmingham in 1912. They specialised in silver mounted dressing table items such as perfume bottles, powder bowls, brushes, hand mirrors, dressing table pots and powder compacts. They ceased trading in the late 1950s.
Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the glass, just one tiny ding in the rim of the lid, a small amount of wear to the gold wash on the inside of the lid and the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 10.5cm / 4.1ins in diameter and stands 5.4cm / 2.1ins high. The lid by itself weighs a very respectable 55.7g / 1.96oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the bowl weighs in at 335.6g / 11.8oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the silver lid, are a little rubbed but stil clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter A for 1950 and the D M Co makers' mark for The Daniel Manufacturing Company.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the powder bowl.
