A beautifully made Melissa powder compact made in the 1950s. Normally the gilding metal (brass) used to make compacts is 95 % copper. This compact has a higher copper content than this & so it has the most gorgeous copper hue. Making it an ideal copper wedding anniversary gift. The whole compact is beautiful. The lid is decorated with a stylized engraving of a flower, the middle forming a cartouche. Around the edges floral motifs & scroll work. The inner lid is very attractive having a intricate guilloche design, it is held in place by the Melissa 'tear drop' catch. The mirror gives a good & accurate reflection - a couple of subtle age spots that are easy to miss. The mirror bezel is inscribed 'MADE IN ENGLAND.' All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The base also has attractive guilloche engraving.
This vintage powder compact measures 7 cm & weighs 72.3 grams.
