This is an early carved coconut 'Bugbear' powder flask decorated with a naïve design of tropical trees and animals and possessing super colour and patina, probably English late 18th century or early 19th century. The surface is divided longitudinally by raised borders into three sections each bearing a tree at the wide end with an animal at the narrow end. The animals depicted are a crocodile, a scorpion and a centipede, the latter two having been scratched in outline onto the surface rather than in relief as is the case with the other carvings. The 'Bugbear' face uses the three natural indentations at the top of the coconut to form eyes and an open mouth.

'Bugbear' flasks were carved by sailors or soldiers who visited the East or West Indies in the late 18th/early 19th centuries, and had access to green coconut shells which were easier to carve than dried ones.
