Antique Belgian Spa Box in Grisaille - c. 1740-179 Belgian Spa Box Jolite de Spa Grisaille %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Rare Antique Belgian Spa Box in Grisaille with Polychrome Accents – c.1740-1790

A beautifully preserved antique Belgian Spa box, exquisitely decorated in the refined grisaille technique, with selective hand-painted color bringing life to key symbolic elements. This elegant domed box measures approximately 5 in x 4 in x 3 in and is a striking example of the craftsmanship associated with Spa work of the 18th century.

The domed lid features an oval cartouche enclosing a romantic pastoral scene: a finely dressed man and woman, attired in 18th-century fashion, stand together outside in nature. The gentleman gently presents a squirrel perched on his arm, while the lady holds a delicate rose. The figures and landscape are rendered in monochrome grisaille, while the squirrel, ribbons, and rose are highlighted in soft color, creating a captivating contrast and drawing the eye to their symbolic importance.

Surrounding the oval is an ornate gilded border, terminating at the top and bottom in expressive grotesque masks, classic motifs found in18th-century European decorative arts and architecture, lending the piece a sense of theatrical elegance.

Each side of the box is uniquely decorated with a central urn motif, flanked by large doves extending vertically from top to bottom. The urn designs vary on each side, showcasing the artisan’s creativity and attention to detail.

The interior is finished in rich red lacquer. While it displays small chips throughout, these create an almost decorative, textured pattern that speaks to the box’s age. The original hinges remain intact, and the box was made without a lock, as is typical for such pieces. The exterior condition is excellent, with no chips only minor wear along the black edges reveals the grisaille ground beneath.

The original Spa label is partially present on the underside of the lid, with only the underlying paper remaining.

Symbolism & Meaning:
The imagery on the lid conveys a subtle narrative of courtship and affection. In 18th-century symbolism, the squirrel often symbolised playfulness or a "captured" heart. Its presence here suggests a gift or offering from the gentleman, possibly symbolizing him offering his heart to the woman next to him. The rose, held by the lady, is a timeless emblem of love, beauty, and emotional openness. Together, the scene may be interpreted as a moment of romantic exchange: the gentleman offering his affection (the squirrel), and the lady acknowledging or reciprocating it (the rose). The wild garden setting enhances this theme, evoking natural, uncontrived love.

This piece is not only a functional object but also a poetic expression of 18th-century sentiment and artistry. Given its rarity and the delightful nature of the scene, it would be a meaningful addition to any collection.
