An Incredibly Small English Oak Ark 1500s
English Oak Ark 1500s
An Incredibly small oak Ark just being over two ft in length
primarily these chests were used for storage of grain / flour/ wheat etc...Originally the canted top on most would of been fitted loose acting as a kneading board "Binnie" or even a hand barrow. This exceptionally rare one due to size, is in a perfect untouched dry condition without hardly any loss on height..all the boards have been cleft/Riven with simple and understated run mouldings to the stiles and canted Lid,an amazing piece of simplistic ingenuity of cleft boards & peg tenons...
The only other diminutive recorded chests that I know of present
is the Peter Gwynn Chest (the clamped front variety) which is 1ft 6" in length and one from the V&A which is 24" in length.
this could possibly be the third smallest?. The very dry underneath of the base being almost Orange in colour ( for Ref see T Jellineck fig 8 page 25 Early Chairs & Seats ).
A superb surviving piece of British antique furniture with honesty and Integrity.
footnote...
Additional & more detailed Images will be uploaded on my Pinterest page along with the other aforementioned arks.
