Alexander S.Buchanan 19th C Oil Portrait

We are delighted to offer this wonderful oil on canvas portrait study of a turn of the century beauty by the artist ALEXANDER STRAHAN BUCHANAN, who has signed the painting A.S.Buchanan in the lower left hand corner. This is a stunning work by this accomplished artist, who exhibited at the Royal Academy six times. The young lady has a sweet face and is wearing a cream coloured dress, with her hair piled up on top of her head.
ALEXANDER STRAHAN BUCHANAN, was a London figure painter, who exhibited between 1902 and 1914 and lived in Southgate and then Palmers Green in London. He appears to have founded a family of painters, as his son Alexander Norman Buchanan (1910-2002) was a listed artist, who married Constance Parrish, also an artist. His daughter Lillian L. Buchanan, was an illustrator and there is also a George Buchanan, who was born in 1948 and was probably a grandson.
There was a studio sale or 70 lots of work by the various family members in 2005, probably after the death of Alexander Norman Buchanan, where several paintings by Alexander Strahan were sold, most reaching several hundred pounds.
He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists and has sales listed on artprice.com (12 listings) and findartinfo.com (6 listings). Although he also painted some landscapes, his figure paintings and portraits were his best work. There were recently 18 watercolour paintings and drawings listed on Ebay by this artist, the portraits being priced at £247.00.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3" ornate gilt frame and slip that suit it very well.
Medium Oils on canvas.
Condition Very good. The canvas is clean and taut. There is one small repair at the bottom of the canvas as shown, but there is no craquelure and only very very slight stretcher marks.
