Alexander Brownlie Docharty Oil Wooded Landscape Alexander Brownlie Docharty 1862-1940 Scottish %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer this superb oil painting on canvas by the Scottish artist Alexander Brownlie Docharty, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a wooded landscape, through which a small stream is rushing, gushing over rocks and, on the right hand side, creating a small waterfall as it descends. This is a really lovely painting.

Alexander Brownlie Docharty was born in Glasgow in 1862, the son of Joseph Docharty. He left school at thirteen to join his father designing calico prints. He studied part-time at Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees. He became a professional artist in 1892. He was the nephew of the artist James Docharty (1829-1878), with whom he shared a studio for some while. He studied in Paris at the Academie Julien in 1894, under Benjamin Constant and Jean Paul Laurens

In 1901 he was living with his family at 3 Jane Street Glasgow, but later moved to Kilkerran, Ayrshire, where he lived and worked. He painted landscapes, primarily in oils, but also produced some fine watercolours. He visited several European countries, including Venice, which he visited several times and one of his paintings was shown at the Venice Biennale in 1903, where it was purchased by the Italian Foreign Minister to hang in a Palazzo in Rome.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1882 (12 works), the Glasgow Institute (155), the Royal Scottish Academy (19), Connel & Sons Gallery (24), the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool (7), Manchester City AG (3), the New English Art Club (2) and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (5).

He died in Glasgow in 1940.

He is listed in the Dictionary of Scottish Painters, the Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors'Club) the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters.

There are 22 of his paintings in the National Collection, which can be viewed at BBC - Your Paintings - just put the artist's name into google.
