A Rare 18th Century French Bracket Clock by Le Roy
This rare 18th century French antique clock was made by the companionship of Denis Francois Dubois and Pierre Le Roy. Denis came from a famous clockmaking dynasty that included his grandfather and father Francois (1732-1772). His father was companion to Julian as well as Pierre Le Roy. It is almost certain that Denis carried on with this partnership after his fathers death, Denis rose through the ranks and was appointed a Parisian Maitre in 1772. He is known to have supplied antique clocks to Louis XV and Louis XVI and a number of fine clocks by him can be found in a number of museums. The famous Pierre II Le Roy (1717-1785) was one of France finest clockmakers, was Clockmaker to the King Louis XV and his developments in clockmaking have been considered as the foundation the modern precision antique clocks. The absolutely stunning case with the stamp for B Lieutaud (1720-1780) is for one of the most important cabinet makers of Louis XV, He became master in 1749. His work was often for the royal courts and this clock is of this highest of standards having incredibly rare fine embossed Russia Calf with polychrome goldfish profusely covering the case.. the fine gilt ormolu is exceptional.. the fine movement has Dutch striking ringing on one bell for the hour.. then repeating the hour on a second bell at the half past point.
The case has been very sympathetically cleaned of all dust and dirt and the fire gilt ormolu has been polished with chalk to ensure that the gold has not been removed. The fine movement has been fully overhauled my me personally and comes with a full three year guarantee for your peace of mind.
An absolutely fabulous clock that is both unique and incredibly rare, manufactured by France’s leading craftsmen of the 18th century.
