A Longcase Clock By Issac Hewlett, Bristol


A fine quality Bristol longcase clock. An arched pediment surmounted by an original brass finial and fretwork panels to the swan neck pediment. A wavy 'Bristol' edge to the hood door. Corinthium capped twist hood columns. A shaped trunk door and base as seen on high quality Bristol cases of the Georgian period. The original bracket feet. A well engraved arched silvered dial with moon phases and high water at Bristol Key tide indicators. A date aperture and seconds hand. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell. A very impressive antique clock.
The Hewlett family of Bristol (Wine Street) are recorded in A J Moores' 'Clockmakers of Bristol' book as working in the 18th century. Issac was noted for making high tide at Bristol Key antique clocks and a number are noted and illustrated in the book. They repaired the Church clocks at St Mary Redcliffe, Stapleton, St Stephens and Brislington.
