Description:
Here we have for sale a very good quality, rare and large antique 21½” James Murray mahogany railway station chiming / striker wall clock, which has been lovingly restored to its former glory and is now in good working order as can been seen from the photos. The antique clock incorporates a mechanism by Meiji Clock Company of Japan, and was originally sold by James Murray of Calcutta (now Kolkata), India.

This clock features a beautiful mahogany case, with a moulded wooden bezel, a pendulum access door on the underside. The mahogany case has been fully restored, including French polishing to revive the wonderful colour and patination of the grain in the timber. The clock has been finished to a colour similar to ebony. On the back of the clock is a bracket to attach the clock to the wall.

This clock houses a top quality double brass barrel spring driven chiming mechanism. The clock chimes once on the half hour and also every hour to the number of hours. The left hand hole in the dial face is to wind up the clock movement and the right hand hole is to wind up the chiming movement. This design gives you the options to either have the chiming mechanism enabled or disabled allowing you to choose whether you want the chiming noise to be heard.

The movement has been professionally restored and serviced and is now in excellent mechanical order, ensuring this clock is reliable and keeping good time. The pendulum, which is attached to the mechanism by accessing the clock from the door below, can be adjusted in length to allow you to regulate the clock speed. The clock comes with a key, which is used to wind the mechanism through the centre of the face dial.

This clock face features a cream colour tin dial with black Roman numerals and elegant shaped hour and minute hand. A hinged solid brass bezel houses the glass face that protects the tin dial and face whilst in operation. The brass bezel opens on a right hand hinge to allow you to adjust or set the time. There is a catch to the back of the clock that locks the brass bezel in place and stops it from accidentally swinging open.

The clock looks great in a variety of rooms and also in either a traditional or contemporary setting. This truly is a very beautiful wall clock of classic styling and quality construction. It will become a member of the family after not too long! So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely antique clock.

Provenance:
James Murray (IV) honed his clock making skills having come from a long line (four generations) of family clock makers who originally started out in business in the late 18th Century in Moffat, Scotland. His great grandfather (James Murray II) moved to Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, circa 1863. James Murray III, who was born in 1870 and took over the business in 1893 until 1920, then succeeded him. James Murray IV, who was born in 1906,then succeeded his father in 1930 until the family business was sold up in 1947 following Indian Independence.

The James Murray family became one of the finest clockmakers and retailers in England and India, selling top quality bracket and wall antique clocks. This Anglo-Indian clockmaker remained the most coveted name in master-crafted timepieces in British India desired by Maharajas, industrialist, politicians and many popular personalities. Their earlier bracket antique clocks made in England now fetch extremely high sums of money. The clock incorporates a mechanism by Meiji Clock Company of Japan, and was originally sold by James Murray of Calcutta (now Kolkata), India.

This clock was designed for use in public buildings such as schools or railway stations within the British colonies therefore its reliability and quality of construction were paramount. This clock is of very good quality and it was constructed prior to wartime restrictions being imposed regarding materials therefore no costs were spared in its construction.
