19thC Welsh Knife Cleaning Wall Pocket Box - Treen
A rare and highly interesting knife cleaning box of traditional form with shaped hanging hole.
These superbly decorative items make wonderful wall features and look great with flowers or a large church candle in them.
Knife cleaning boxes are almost always made from pine due to the nature of the timber greatly improving the functionality of the piece.
The knife cleaning board was laid flat and grease applied to the length of the board, then fine sand was dusted onto the grease which made a rudimentary abrasive surface like a fine sandpaper. The knifes blade was drawn across the board to keep it free from rust and to keep the edge keen. Sometimes a small brick of fine sandstone was rubbed into the surface of the knife cleaning board without the use of grease producing a similar sandpaper effect, the softer nature of the pine allowing the sand to grip into the surface of the board.
Knife cleaning boxes are rare items which were once common and found in most households in West Wales.
