19th Century Mahogany Hall Porters Chair
A wonderful and rare 19th Century mahogany hall porters chair upholstered in leather.
English circa 1870.
Always a rare item to find and especially of this unique design. Elegantly constructed in the Georgian manner with wide proportions.
The mahogany timbered ‘C’ scroll framed hood having serpentine sides and out swept mahogany fronted arms.
Retaining what looks to be a very old, possibly original leather and individual brass studwork, the back having shallow buttons over a sprung seat, raised on tapering legs and brass castors to the front with swept legs to the rear.
The leather is in excellent condition having retained a wonderful faded colour and depth. This chair would have been used at the entrance of a large country house / estate, designed to envelop the porter / gatekeeper to keep them warm as there were often cold breezes near the front doors, where he could be sat for long periods of time.
