19th C. Oil/Can Italian Catholic Bishop
We are delighted to offer this superb 19th century oil on canvas full length portrait of and Italian Roman Catholic bishop. The painting is unsigned.
The painting depicts a Roman Catholic bishop, of Italian origin we think, wearing choir dress, which consists of his cappa magna or long robe with ermine shoulder cape, under which he is wearing a purple cassock over which there is a beautiful lace rochet. He is wearing a gold pectoral cross with precious stones on a gold chain and his single stone episcopal ring on the third finger of his right hand. On his head he is wearing his biretta. R.C. bishops wear purple or amaranth red choir dress, while cardinals wear bright red. The execution of the lacework is exquisite.
The painting has been executed on an English canvas and was framed in London, so we presume that the artist was English, although we cannot be sure.
The painting is framed in a 3 5/8" ornate gilt frame and it is ready to hang.
