1980s Quality Walnut Inlaid Commode

A Late 20th Century Walnut Inlaid Commode by Brights of Nettlebed
An elegant late 20th century commode by Brights of Nettlebed, a respected family firm renowned for fine English furniture since 1866. This shaped chest combines classic English design with excellent modern cabinetmaking.
Veneered in walnut with yew burl banding, the commode has a break inverted bowed top that follows the contours of the case. Below are three inverted bowed, line-strung walnut drawers, offering a subtle contrast of grain and tone. The upper section incorporates a sliding tray, with three long drawers beneath providing ample storage.
Turned, tapering columns flank the drawer fronts, lending structure, symmetry and a pleasing architectural quality. The chest stands on fluted peg feet with brass caps, which add both stability and a refined decorative finish. The careful use of veneers, stringing and banding showcases the crisp, high-quality workmanship throughout.
This model remains in production today and can still be ordered new from Brights of Nettlebed, underlining both the quality and enduring desirability of the design.
Walnut has long been regarded as one of the finest timbers for furniture, prized for its deep, chocolate-brown colour, elegant grain and excellent durability. It brings immediate warmth and a sense of understated luxury to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Although this is not the type of piece I usually offer, I was particularly struck by the standard of craftsmanship, the sharpness of the inlay and its strong decorative presence. I acquired this commode from a large private estate in Surrey, together with a shorter console table, a long console table, a coffee table and a pair of side tables, all in the same walnut with matching inlay and the same high level of workmanship.
This is a versatile, timeless piece, ideal for a living room, dining room, bedroom or study. Elegant yet practical, it is designed to be both used and admired, and to give pleasure for many years to come.
Height 77cm (30.3in)
Width 81.5cm (32.1in)
Depth 50.5cm (19.9in)
